We’re in the midst of our first major snowstorm of the season and for the most part, it’s lived up to the hype. Snow started falling Saturday morning and has not let up since. We’re on day four of being essentially stuck at home. Matt attempted to take Jamie to a birthday party Saturday afternoon and gave up before even leaving the neighborhood. Yesterday, I was able to get out in the afternoon for a much needed haircut and to stock up on some last minute groceries. Good thing I made it to the store, looks like we’ll be home for at least another day or two, if not longer.
This is what our neighborhood looked like on Saturday afternoon after four hours of snow…
…by this afternoon, things hadn’t changed much.
While the snow is beautiful and we’ve had a wonderful time (carefully) walking the neighborhood and sledding down the hill in the park across from the house, we are also getting a little stir crazy.
This is where Pinterest comes in. Since joining the site a few months back, I’ve been amassing a collection of pins on my Crafty Fun board. Matt finds my ‘obsession’ with Pinterest amusing but I can hands down say that it saved my sanity today. By the time Zoe went down for her morning nap at 945am, the kids had already trashed the playroom and the family room as well as having logged more than the usual number of hours in front of the TV (thank you Jamie for getting up at 5am today, sigh). Usually while Zoe naps, Jamie and I will have snack, he’ll watch a show while I do a little laundry or tiddying up, then I pry him away from the couch for some quality time. With the amount of time we’ve been spending at home, I’m QUICKLY running out of things for Jamie and I to do.
Today, while he watched his show, I pulled up my Crafty Fun board and decided we’d do THIS, colored mini-volcanoes.
squirt a few drops of food coloring into soup spoons
Place a matching number of clear containers (I used ramekins) in a roasting pan. Fill each ramekin about 1/2 to 2/3 with white vinegar. Don’t skip the roasting pan, it’ll save you from a super mess and speed up your clean up process.
Fill each spoon with baking soda. I prepped the whole project while Jamie was watching TV so he had NO idea there was color in the spoons, it added a major element of surprise.
Have your kiddo mix the food coloring/baking soda into the vinegar and watch the fun begin.
Unfortunately, I was almost out of white vinegar so our ramekins didn’t quite have enough vinegar to make colored bubbles but it was fun none the less. He liked discovering what color was at the bottom once the bubbles settled.
When we were all done and there was no more fizz to be seen, I had Jamie practice his colors by mixing them to make new colors.
Lastly, I poured the colored vinegar into a spray bottle and let the him“paint” snow. This project was incredibly quick to set up, relatively quick to clean up and bought me an hour of special time with Jamie.
Tomorrow who knows what we’re going to do…I can only build so many snowmen and snow forts.
