I'm posting this from my phone, sitting on my bed where my little man is half sleeping, half watching a show while recovering from getting his tonsils and adenoids out.
For the most part, lounging is all he wants to do but he does get little bursts of energy and for when he does, I have the perfect activity - a rice garden. I read about this craft on a preschool-homeschool blog a few months back and even bought all the supplies but didn't put it together until earlier this week when it popped up on my pinterest feed.
Matt thought I was crazy rushing to get this together before Jamie's surgery but it's been a great, non-active creative activity for when he wants to get off the couch.
I used three two-pound bags of rice split into six gallon ziplock bags. In each bag I added 3-4 tablespoons white vinegar and about 10 drops food coloring. Zip closed, mix well then leave bags open over night to dry.
Pour rice into a large plastic bin, I used an under bed storage bin since its shallow and was on sale. Add some sand toys and any other gardening type toys ( I found felt bendy flowers in the target dollar aisle!).
Be sure you put an activity mat or shower curtain beneath the bin so rice doesn't get everywhere then let the kids at it.
Oh and keep far from the nearly crawling 11 month old who wants to climb in the bin and eat all the rice :) When they're done playing for the time being, simply cover and put away until the next rainy, indoor day.

Colored rice?! Ack! A blast from the past....many memories of the horrors of making MAPS with it for school. I like your idea much better! Found you through This Week For Dinner.
